SANTIAGO.- Following accusations made by the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, linking the current INTERPOL president and director of Police Investigations, Arturo Herrera, to Human Rights violations during the military regime, the UDI has asked La Moneda to promptly deny the Chávez’ “new interference tactic”.
“If we allow Chávez to attack the chief of Police Investigations today, tomorrow he is going to continue by attacking the Army and other institutions. The government needs to put President Chávez in his place once and for all”, Iván Moreira, who is a member of the Chamber of Deputies Foreign Affairs Commission, told El Mercurio.
The member of Parliament’s request came after Hugo Chávez stated that Arturo Herrera, according to a “police report (…) is implicated in the so-called ´Operation Remove Televisions´ that took place towards the end of 1975 or beginning of 1976, which was ordered by General Augusto Pinochet to cover up Human Rights violations committed during the dictatorship”.
