PUERTO MONTT.- Paula Narváez, the government-delegated official in charge of the emergency response to the eruption of the Chaitén volcano, has stated that disaster relief payments for victims will begin to be distributed as of today.

According to Naváez, the list of people approved for the benefit will be published in local newspapers.

“1,988  payments will be distributed today and the list of people who will receive them will be published in local media outlets”, she stated.

Additionally, another list containing the names of the rest of the evacuees is currently being composed.  The roster, which will contain the names of more than 5,000 people, should be ready by Thursday or Friday of this week.

The payment offers vicitims 680 thousand pesos in aid, although not everyone will receive the same amount.  The sum of money will vary according to the victims´ social security plan, the number of children they have, as well as their familial obligations. Another factor considered is whether or not the benificiary had refused to leave their home in Futaleufú, for which they are penalized with a reduced amount .
