SANTIAGO. - The mayors if the three municipalities that have been affected by the eruption of the Chaitén volcano in the province of Palena met with the general sub secretary of the Executive Branch, Edgardo Riveros, this morning.
The southern leaders asked the government to hurry along projects that have been planned to connect the area with the rest of the country and to offer a prompt solution to problems in the educational system.
Given that the connectivity projects are expected to take between ten and fifteen years according to the Ministry of Public Works, the mayor of Chaitén, José Miguel Fritiz, has asked the Executive Branch “to hurry up, because where there is a will and a way, things that are supposed to take 15 years can be completed in half the time”.
The mayor has said that authorities are happy that the political decision has been made to complete the projects, but stressed that it is crucial that they be put into action soon since the municipality is one that earns a great deal from the tourist industry.
