SANTIAGO.- Police arrived this morning to break up a group of student protesters marching along Alameda, the capital city´s main road.  The demonstrators then proceeded to march towards the Ministry of Education building to protest against the General Education Law (LGE) proposal.

Close to 30 students have been arrested for public disorder after the group disrupted traffic in the area.  The majority of the students began to make their way towards Estación Central as law enforcement officers resorted to the use of high-pressure hoses and tear gas to break up the disturbance.

At 9:30 this morning, close to one thousand students from various high schools were supervised by police officers as they gathered on the corner of Ricardo Cumming and Alameda.

Yesterday, the spokesperson for the Liceo de Aplicación, Sebastián Torres, stated that the march  (organized by the High School Student Coordination Assembly “ACES”) would take place “with or without permission from the Santiago city government”.

High school students have resumed strikes and protests this week in schools throughout Santiago, as well as in other parts of the country.
