SANTIAGO.- The government decided today to postpone an announcement concerning the measures that will be taken to confront spiking fuel prices.  The initiatives, which were originally scheduled to be revealed on Saturday, will now be declared first thing Monday morning.

“We believe it is appropriate for us to aid police at this time and the truth is that the measures that were going to be announced on Saturday will be just as relevant and important if announced early Monday morning”, asserted President Michelle Bachelet.

During an extraordinary meeting called by President Michelle Bachelet between the Political Committee of Ministers on Wednesday, the government resolved to take radical measures (that had initially been planned to begin within the following 48 hours) to compensate for high price of oil.

At the beginning of the week, the National Oil Company (Enap) reported that fuel prices would experience new increases and indicated that gasoline would go up by $18 pesos, diesel by $24, and domestic kerosene by $25.

With the new price jumps, 93-octane gasoline will cost $605 pesos per liter, 95-octane gasoline will be at $624 and 97-octane gasoline at $642, while diesel will reach $623.
