SANTIAGO.- The President of the Association of Teachers, Jaime Gajardo, called the organization’s day of demonstrations yesterday in Santiago “an extraordinary success”.  The event managed to bring together more that two thousand students and hundreds of educators to voice their discontent with the General Education Law (LGE).

According to the organization’s president, “the day of demonstrations was an extraordinary success, a turnout we didn’t expect, we have a country-wide count indicating that between 90 and 95 percent of teachers halted activities from Arica to Magallanes”.

During an interview with Chilevisión, Gajardo stated, “an education law is very important, an approval would be valid for at least 20 to 30 years and the stakes are very high, so a law of this nature should not be decided on by leaders, but should instead be open for national debate”.

Gajardo also pointed out, “we are not against profits in education but we think that if someone wants to make a profit, they should do so using their own resources, not by using those that belong to the Chilean people, because those resources are very scarce”.
