SANTIAGO.- the head of the National Federation of Truck Owners, Juan Araya, asked for “concrete signs” today so that the organization’s strike can be stopped. As of yesterday, the group decided to indefinitely extend the demonstration.

Araya (who radically changed his stance after having announced that the strike would end at midnight) stated that even though “the government had been counting on the fact that we would (end the strike within 48 hours) “, the decision was revoked by the bases.

The truckers are demanding a 10% cut on the fuel excise tax, more transparency for diesel sale costs as well as the stabilization, “not a subsidy”, in the price of oil (for at least) 90 days.

“I hope that we receive some signs from the government today, but concrete signs, not vague ideas, so that we can inform our bases and let them make a decision”, Araya told Radio Cooperativa.

Concerning fears of a general supply shortage due to the strike, Araya assured that the truckers “are very aware of the fact and we have been very orderly”, arguing that the Executive Branch is obligated to offer a response.
