SANTIAGO.- According to the spokesperson for the East Public Prosecutor’s Office, Mario Schilling, 60 robberies were registered in a matter of only 10 days within the eastern part of the capital – affecting homes, businesses and stores.

The statistics gathered by the public prosecutor’s office are from the last 10 days of May, during which time 20 armed robberies were registered in homes located within the eastern part of the city.

According to Schilling, two home robberies have been reported per day in the same area over the first 10 days of this month.  Meanwhile, during the same period in 2007, only one robbery was registered every 15 days.

Shilling indicated that authorities might have already identified some of the groups attacking the east sector of the city, one of which may even be led by a woman.

While it is still not clear how many criminal bands are operating in east Santiago, authorities are still investigating the matter and believe there are probably more than three.
