Zaldívar: Fuel fund increase "is just a band-aid measure"

The president of Senate stated that the measure does not offer any real solution for the owners of small and medium-sized businesses and insisted upon the need to eliminate the federal fuel tax.

SANTIAGO.- The president of the Senate, Adolfo Zaldívar, spoke about the one billion dollar increase to the Fuel Stabilization Fund today saying, “yesterday’s approval is a just band-aid measure, despite the fact that we have a surplus that would have allowed us to mitigate the effects of global inflation”.

Zaldívar criticized that, due to such measures, “inflation is climbing to over 8 percent, and to over 12% in poorer areas (he added) what is happening is a disaster.  I don’t understand how authorities don’t realize this; I really don’t understand the government”.

The senator also maintained that he does not agree with the series of resolutions given to sectors that held protests in search of industry-specific benefits because the fuel hikes are affecting the entire middle class.

“What aid is given to a small or medium agricultural business nowadays?  The federal fuel tax doesn’t make any sense”, stated Zaldívar.
