SANTIAGO.- On a key day for the approval of the General Education Law (LGE), both students and professors have been holding demonstrations since the early hours of this morning.
In the municipality of Estación Central, students guarded themselves with blockades that they constructed and then set on fire in front of the Universidad de Santiago de Chile (USACH). The students have currently barricaded themselves inside the university campus.
Meanwhile, buses have begun to leave from the Teachers´ Association headquarters on their way to Valparaíso to attend negotiations over the law at Congress.
Radio Cooperativa announced that the caravan of educators will be subjected to police inspections at the Zapata tunnel.
The government will present a new amendment to the bill today that was agreed upon with the Alianza in an attempt to salvage the education pact and ensure the approval of the LGE.
The terms of the amendment were reached between the General Secretariat of the Presidency, José Antonio Viera-Gallo, and the Alianza negotiation representative, Cristián Larroulet.
