SANTIAGO.- Amid criticism from the presidents of political parties belonging to the Concertación, as well as from some left-wing deputies, President Michelle Bachelet signed a protocol of accession this morning requiring the government to present a second law (apart from the LGE) to strengthen public education.

During her speech, the President stated that the goal of the General Education Law (LGE) is to put an end to the Organic Constitutional Education Law (LOCE) and, in turn, better regulate education and the quality of schooling within the country.

The President also stressed the government’s dedication to public education and stated, “the country knows that this conviction is permanent (...) we want humanistic, robust, high quality education that is for everyone, because that is the main source of social unity and change”.

After several weeks of uncertainty, the proposal allowed the current government administration to smooth out some of the rough edges of the General Education Law at the Chamber of Deputies.  Additionally, the political committee has agreed to meet with party leaders and the directors of the government administration in Parliament.
