SANTIAGO.- The president of the Christian Democracy party (DC), Soledad Alvear, has acknowledged for the first time that she will register for the primaries of her party in aspiration of becoming the next President of Chile.

After being asked whether or not she is a presidential pre-candidate while on the Channel 13 television program “Telenoche”, the east Santiago Senator responded, “I am going to register, yes (for the party primaries)”.

According to Alvear, a candidate from the Christian Democracy party is the Concertación´s best bet to defeat the National Renovation (RN) party leader, Sebastián Piñera.

“The votes that end up defining the election are center votes, from people who are more partial towards Christian Humanism”, Alvear argued.

With regards to the upcoming municipal elections, the DC president said that she believes her party will recover emblematic municipalities that are currently governed by the right, such as Santiago, La Reina and Estación Central, and indicated that she would consider it a success to obtain between 18% and 29% of popular support.
