José Miguel Insulza was also considered, but has been ruled out due to the fact that his name could be associated with the conflict he had with Hugo Chávez.

SANTIAGO.- Amid the heightened crisis currently facing President Cristina Kirchner´s administration following the demands that have been made by the Agricultural sector, a group of important Argentine leaders is currently planning to ask former President Ricardo Lagos to intervene in the conflict.

According to the newspaper “Perfil”, the idea to petition Lagos´ intervention arose within the offices of the president of the Argentine periodical “La Nación”, Julio Saguier.  Saguier allegedly proposed asking Lagos to mediate to some of his business partners, which include important opinion leaders, seeing the intervention of an external agent as a possible way to bring and end to the crisis.

For the group of leaders, lead by Julio Saguier, Lagos represents a powerful figure and possesses enough character to help bring together different viewpoints without being biased towards any of the parties involved in the crisis.

According to the Argentine newspaper, both Ricardo Lagos and the secretary general of the OAS, José Miguel insulza, were included on the list of possible arbiters who could help resolve the agricultural conflict.
