SANTIAGO.- While speaking about environmental contamination, the head of the Metropolitan Region, Álvaro Erazo, indicated that pollution reduction “is a problem and also a challenge”, adding that he believes, “we are headed in the right direction, as long as we don’t forget about the episodes we experienced this week, because now we need to make structural decisions”.

During an interview with Canal 13, Erazo stated, “there is a component that has to do with a prediction or forecast system that has malfunctioned.  These predictions need to be reported very clearly, especially when we need to announce a pre-emergency alert, the system fails 50 percent of the time”, he stressed.

Erzao also added, “there are 840 companies that have to suspend their activities when a pre-emergency alert is announced, and therefore, it is crucial that we have a much more rigorous system for determining the measures that should be adopted”.

The mayor also maintained that “if you do the research, you’ll see that since 1990, we have been able to reduce the particles that pose the most significant health threats, the PM 2.5”.
