SANTIAGO.- The head of the Victims of Crime Association, Attorney Gonzalo Fuenzalida, has stated that the Undersecretary of the Interior, Felipe Harboe, “is attempting to explain the inexplicable and downplay crime statistics”.

Fuenzalida referred to the 6.9 percent increase in reports of serious crimes, which had been released by the Minister of the Interior for the January-March period of 2008.

Compared to the same trimester in 2007, the figure rose from 615.3 to 657.8 cases for every 100 thousand residents, an increase that can be attributed to reports from the Metropolitan and Bío Bio Regions, which have registered increases of 6.6 and 8.0 percent respectively.

For Fuenzalida, the reported crime figure is not good, because it shows that “crime is on the rise and this is being reflected by the reports”, he stated on Radio Agricultura.
