PUNTA ARENAS.- Marcos Ibacache, who was in the capacity of Punta Arenas Military Prosecutor up until yesterday, has assured that he performed his job honorably and honestly after being removed from his position following the investigation that has been initiated against him concerning a possible link with an international drug-trafficking organization.

“I found myself involved is something completely involuntarily and I am certain that I will come out of this unscathed because my service in the region has always been honorable and honest”, he said during an interview with Radio Cooperativa.

Ibacache, a former Army major, said that he voluntarily resigned on Thursday immediately following his arraignment, and that for now, he has “not received any notification of dismissal”, as had been announced by the Minister of Defense, José Goñi, on Thursday.

Ibacache asserted that his connection to drug-trafficking has to do with an Argentine client that hired him in Punta Arenas to regularize his immigration situation in the country. The man was later caught smuggling marihuana cigarettes.
