SANTIAGO.- The vice-president of the UDI (Independent Democratic Union), Evelyn Matthei, stated today that if any representatives from her party have been involved in corrupt behavior, party leaders will “not hesitate for one moment” to punish them.
The senator maintained that the party would offer its utmost support to the mayors that are being questioned concerning possible financial irregularities, as long as there is no evidence to prove that they indeed participated in illegal activities.
Matthei added that there is a difference between financial irregularities that can exist within a municipality and acts of corruption, since the latter must be established by the courts.
According to the senator, political support is offered to defendants when there is a reasonable amount of doubt concerning their possible guilt and that the same support is revoked “when the truth of their actions is revealed”.
