DC bench askes Goñi to speed up initiative to abolish the Copper Law

The parliament members met with the head of Defense in order to become familiar with the details of the law project.

SANTIAGO.- After learning the details of the draft the current government administration has drawn up for a law project to abolish the current Copper Law, deputies belonging to the Christian Democracy (DC) have offered the Minister of Defense, José Goñi, their utmost support for the intiative and have asked that the process be hastened. 


The leaders of the bench, Eduardo Saffirio and Gonzalo Duarte, stated that they hope the Executive Branch “will indeed send the bill through as quickly as possible” and indicated that it is a aspiration that the bench has held for a long time maintaining, “now that the political will exists to make progress on the matter, the idea is to go ahead with it promptly”.


With regards to the meeting sustained with Minister Goñi, Deputy Saffirio said that it “was very enlightening and we have guaranteed our support for the initiative, which will bring an end to the 10% contribution Codelco is forced to provide to the armed forces, favoring a search for other mechanisms, such as the multi-year budgets”.


The bench said it is in favor of a new planning system that will take into consideration, for example, the establishment of multi-year budgets through a four or five-year planning law.
