SANTIAGO.-  From Madrid, the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, commented to Radio Agricultura that Colombia has changed a great deal in recent years and, despite the fact that there is still a substantial amount of crime, security in the nation has improved considerably.

“It is much safer now that it has been over the last 50 years.  Nowadays in Medellín and Bogotá people walk the streets and the number of attacks has decreased very substantially”, he stated.

Concerning the end of the FARC, Insulza clarified that it would not happen overnight, since the terrorist organization uses drug trafficking to sustain itself.

“It is sustained by drug trafficking and that is why it could continue to remain intact, but its decline started a long time ago.  Hundreds of guerilla soldiers are seeking peace plans or leaving to go back to their homes”, asserted Insulza.
