SANTIAGO.- The former president of the Presidential Advising Council for Education, Juan Eduardo García Huidobro, has joined in on criticism of the current law project being debated in Parliament, just as several high school students have made their way to the streets to protest the General Education Law (LGE).
After a critical analysis of the law proposal at the Presidential Advising Council debate, which he was elected to preside over, Juan Eduardo García Huidobro expressed his reluctance for the General Education Law. The initiative is currently being debated at the Senate on its way towards government approval.
García Huidobro stated that, even with the current LGE, there are setbacks, for example, the fact that it does not refer to the task of strengthening public education as a responsibility of the State. The former councilor also said that he believes none of the agreements that have been reached by the Executive Branch signify progress on issues that are important to the system.
While he indicated that there have been some advances on certain aspects, García Huidobro stressed that quality, access and changes in the municipal system are some of the important issues that need to be addressed in order to improve education.
