SANTIAGO.-  The president of the Teachers´ Association (Colegio de Profesores), Jaime Gajardo, has admitted that the only hope for an alternative to the General Education Law (LGE) would be if a nation-wide, united movement were declared throughout all sectors.

“That is why we are fighting now, because we know that it is very unlikely that the Senate will reject the approval of the LGE and there is very little we can do about it, but we are still going to wage a battle”, said Gajardo.

Gajardo also referred to the Santiago City Government’s decision not to  grant authorization for a march that is planned for today to protest the LGE, calling it a serious mistake on the part of authorities, and indicated that he hopes to gather a crowd of close to ten thousand protesters including teachers, public workers and students.

"There has been no agreement and we are going to continue our demonstrations, then we’ll see what happens.  The meeting points will be at Estación Central, Mapocho, the intersection of San Diego and Matta, and Plaza Italia”, asserted Gajardo.
