Low-intensity earthquake felt in northern part of the country

According to a report issued by the ONEMI, intesities ranged from II to IV degrees on the Mercalli scale.

ARICA.-  According to a report issued by regional directors of the National Emergency Office (ONEMI), a low-intensity earthquake was registered early this morning in the regions of Arica, Parinacota and Tarapacá.


The report emitted by the organization indicates that the quake´s intensity ranged from II to IV degrees on the Mercalli scale.


The seismic movement, which occurred at 5:13 AM, reportedly did not cause any structural damage or personal injuries.


According to the United States Geological Service, the earthquake had an epicenter located 53 kilometers to the north-east of Arequipa, Peru, at a depth of 74 kilometers. 


The ONEMI has indicated that Arica and Putre were they areas where the quake could be felt with most intensity, reaching IV degrees, while the towns of Tacora and Alzerreca reported an intensity of III degrees.  Iquique, Alto Hospicio and Pozo Almonte all registered an intensity of only II degrees.
