SANTIAGO.- Despite insisting that he would not comment on matters involving the presidential election during his visit to Chile, the secretary general of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, referred to somewhat political topics this morning and made and agreement with his party to postpone his exit from the international organization amid the possibility that he could become the group’s 2009 presidential candidate.
The information was confirmed by the president of the Socialist Party (PS), Camilo Escalona, who assured that the party would not place any type of condition on Insulza and said that he would only leave the OAS if, during the socialist convention on the 29th of November, he is chosen to be the candidate.
Escalona denied statements made by the secretary general of the PS, Marcelo Schilling, who proposed yesterday that the former minister will need to define his candidacy before such time, and therefore, would need to leave his position at the OAS.
“The Socialist Party does not place any conditions on its pre-candidates, they can participate as they wish and anyone can register”, stated Escalona.
