SANTIAGO.- After a study from the Organization of Consumers and Users of Chile (ODECU) revealed the presence of a toxic material in plastic bottles being sold on the national market, the director of the Toxicology Information Center at the Universidad Católica (CITUC), Pediatrician Enrique París, has clarified the real risks posed by Bisfenol A and those who are most vulnerable.
“The children at risk are those who are primarily fed with milk, meaning, newborns to infants of 18 months. Nevertheless, infants between the ages of six months and a year and a half are considered the most vulnerable, because before that time, children are fed with breast milk”, París explained while issuing a call for mothers to prolong breastfeeding as long as possible.
During a conversation with Emol, the director of CITUC stated that the only time Bisfenol A is released is when the polycarbonate material used to make the bottles is subjected to temperatures above 80 degrees Celsius. Therefore, consumers should avoid micro-waving or boiling the bottles during cleaning.
