SANTIAGO.-  The former undersecretary of Transportation and former president of Chilean State Railways (EFE), Guillermo Díaz, has been sentenced to 61 days of house arrest and is banned for life from working in public service positions.

The sentence was issued by Minister Gloria Ana Chevesich after Díaz was convicted of 9 million pesos worth of fraudulent acts against the Treasury during an investigation into the alleged misuse of public funds through contracts between the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) and the company, “Foro”.

The investigation had begun the 11th of August of 2005, when Chevesich started to look into contracts with the consulting company (to perform transportation surveys) that were handled by Díaz while he served as the director of Operations at the General Grant Coordination Office.
