Police officer tries to commit suicide outside medical facility in San Bernardo

SANTIAGO.-  Police are investigating the attempted suicide of a law enforcement officer belonging to the Sixth Police Station of Recoleta, which occurred early this morning in front of a medical facility.

The incident was reported at approximately 5 AM today outside the San Bernardo SAPU medical center, located on the corner of Condell and Los Morros Avenue.  The policeman, who has not yet been identified, allegedly had gone to ask his for custody of his three year old daughter from his ex wife, who worked as a paramedic at the facility.

After the woman denied him custody during their confrontation, the man locked himself in his car and was attempting to take his life with a handgun.

Nevertheless, the tragedy was prevented by the quick arrival of police, as well special help rendered by an on-duty officer who convinced the man to rethink his actions.
