SANTIAGO.-  As of today, Chilean Prison Official  Ricardo Navarro Ascencio, who works as a guard at the head office of the justice facility, has been on a hunger strike for two weeks.

44 year-old Navarro, who is a First Sargeant, has already begun to show signs of health problems, prompting the doctors who are monitoring him inside the Penitentiary to connect him to intravenous therapy in efforts to keep him hydrated.

According to the secretary of the National Association of Prison Officials of Chile, Juán Alarcón, the strike is motivated by the fact that “it has been a year and a half since any prison officials have received a raise, there is no money now and that is impossible since the raises are part of the country’s annual budget, meaning they were assigned last year”.
