SANTIAGO.-  “I have never said that we are going to lose power, or anything of that nature”.  This was the emphatic response given by the Minister of Interior, Edmundo Pérez Yoma,  this morning to explain statements he issued to a magazine, which have stirred up quite a controversy within the current government administration - even prompting pleas for the authority’s resignation.

According to Pérez Yoma, the headline of the magazine - “We have to be prepared to lose power”- was taken out of context.

“I mean exactly what I have just said:  that in a democracy, one needs to be prepared to take the power and one has to be prepared to lose the power.  There is not one phrase in that interview that I believe is wrong, the only problem is that the headline is taken completely out of context”, he asserted.

Pérez Yoma insisted that his statement was purely in reference to the fact that, in all democratic systems, there is a possibility of winning or losing the elections.
