SANTIAGO.- The president of the Chilean Association of Municipalities, Buin Mayor Ángel Bozán, has stated that he is in favor of the initiative requiring mayors to have graduated from high school, and even said that it should be extended to include town councilors.
“We want to show that the municipalities of Chile are here to ensure that the mayors are people that have at least graduated from high school (…). Furthermore, I would even venture to say that the measure should apply to candidates for town councilor as well”, Bozán told Radio Cooperativa.
In the mayor’s opinion, since the Chilean municipal education system nowadays requires all citizens to receive a high school diploma, “we should set an example and be consistent that this must indeed be the case”, assured Bozán.
Bozán also claimed that it is the responsibility of the political parties to present candidates that fulfill the minimum requirements. “In Chile, all authorities should be required to comply with what is demanded of citizens”, stressed the mayor.
