SANTIAGO.- The “Hogar de Cristo” charity organization has warned of fraudulent activity involving individuals that reportedly could be using the name of the institution to gain entrance to the homes of wealthy families.
The non-profit group warned of the situation by way of a press release indicating that they had received reports that people may be calling private residences, claiming to represent the foundation, and saying that a new charity project has been created.
The fraudulent project allegedly involves wealthy families allowing individuals with scarce resources to live with them in their home.
In order to become part of the fake program, the individuals claiming to be a part of the institution request to visit to the sponsor family’s home to make sure they fulfill the requirements necessary to participate in the project.
Hogar de Cristo announced that the practice “is not part of any kind of procedure or program being carried out the by the foundation”.
“Contributions given to Hogar de Cristo to support those living in poverty are made through social programs that are financed by member donations, which can be collected either by automatic deductions or in-home collections; private donations; and donations of extra change at supermarkets, pharmacies or Campaign Partners”, declared the organization.
The press release adds that the in-home donation visits are performed by collectors, whose mission is to find contributors and go pick up their donations - clarifying that these people always take an identification card with them, which can be verified by calling 600 570 8000.
