SANTIAGO.- “Estación Central is the municipality that would bring consistency to the agreement with the Concertación, it is what would really give it political importance”. These were the words of the president of the Communist Party (PC), Guillermo Teillier, explaining why the municipality has become a pivotal point in negotiations for the electoral omission agreement between the Concertación and his party.
Just house before the registration period for municipal election candidates is closed, the leader continues to consider the government offer announced yesterday to support PC candidates for mayor in close to 10 municipalities “insufficient”.
In light of the situation, Teillier is betting that the Christian Democracy will agree before midnight tonight to give up Estación Central, where the PC plans to present a powerful card for the party - Human Rights lawyer and current city councilor for the municipality, Hugo Gutiérrez, as a candidate.
If this does not happen, Tellier warns, “we will pull out of important municipalities such as Santiago, Maipú and Recoleta”, which are all places where the candidate running for mayor is a member of the Christian Democracy.
