SANTIAGO.- Ecuadorian doctor Galo Andrade Pita has refused to reach a settlement with one of his medical negligence victims and pay her the amount she has asked for as retribution for an injury he caused to her during 2005 in the Municipality of Independencia.

23 year-old Nataly Fournet de Paulo suffered burns and disfigurement to her abdomen during a surgery performed by Andrade, who was using an electric scalpel to remove stretch marks from the woman.

The incident occurred just months before the doctor was arrested and charged with causing the death of Jessica Osorio in October of 2005 during an abdominoplasty procedure that he was not qualified to perform.

Fournet had asked Andrade –who in her case was charged with inflicting serious injuries due to medical negligence- to pay an amount of 6 million pesos in order to finance an additional surgery to repair the damage.
