OGOTÁ.- Three days after the presidential hopeful for the National Renovation, Sebastián Piñera, found himself in an intense quarrel with the Minister of Interior, Edmundo Pérez Yoma, concerning the amount of progress being made on the fight against crime (which Piñera said could be combated in Chile using methods that have been carried out in Colombia), the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, has completely refuted the business tycoon´s statements.
“I don´t want to get into a debate with Mr. Piñera, but all you have to do is ask someone from Colombia and they will say: ´but what are they comparing? There is nothing to compare…”, he stated.
While visiting Colombia, the secretary general of the OAS acknowledged that the controversial statements made by Piñera, who called on the Chilean government to follow the example set by the President of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe, have been commented on by the nation’s press.
“It left the entire world a bit perplexed because people know that the public safety situation in Chile is completely different from that of Colombia”, maintained Insulza.
