SANTIAGO.- Amid intense questioning of authorities at the Instituto Nacional, the Mayor of Santiago, Raúl Alcaíno, has just announced that the rector and vice rector of the educational center, Omar Letelier and Alejandro Donoso, have left their positions.

As interim rector, the mayor appointed Jorge Toro Beretta, who had been working as the rector of Liceo Miguel Luis Amunátegui.

Additionally, a commission was established to resolve all deficiencies related to the historical education center.  The group will be led by the former rector of the University of Chile, Luís Riveros, and will also include Doctor of Education María Eugenia Nordenflycht, educational expert Carlos Cáceres and Attorney Juan Carlos González.

The commission will also form another organization to be in charge of highly-respected alumni, who will help to determine a new set of guidelines for the institution.

The school’s current situation is a result of student and teacher discontent with Rector Omar Letilier´s leadership.  Coupled with student the protests held in May and June, the disgruntlement became quite palpable at the institute and ended with a request for a staff meeting to evaluate administration and infrastructural problems at the school.
