SANTIAGO.- The president of the Education Commission of the Upper House, Alejandro Navarro (Socialist Party), has announced that he plans to “appeal” to the Children’s Rights Committee of the United Nations, “to reverse the decision” of the Dario Salas school to suspend and cancel the enrollment of María Música Sepúlveda for throwing a jar of water at the Minister of Education.
The parliamentarian argued that both the educational establishment and the Ministry of Education are obligated to abide by the Human Rights standards of the United Nations.
Navarro affirmed that he does not share nor endorse the aggression of the Secretary of State, stating “to me it seems inconsistent that little to no of the deserved importance is given to the brutal attacks suffered by young people when they participate in demonstrations”.
Along the same strain, Navarro pointed out that “last year the United Nations ordered the State to revert to measures of complete reparation and social reinsertion for children assaulted by police in student demonstrations”. He also asserted that “everyone knows and everyone has seen the photos of María Música beaten by Police”.
