SANTIAGO.- After receiving a request from the UDI to create a report about the workings of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Senator Hernán Larraín explained the main topics that the document will address and revealed his opinion concerning the feasibility of Chile becoming part of the treaty.

“For Chile, joining the ICC does not imply a change in its current situation, because crimes that fall under the jurisdiction of the ICC are not crimes that are being presently committed in Chile, and so there is no problem in that respect”, stated Larraín.

Larraín also pointed out that as the nation advances in its classification of crimes that are included in the Rome Statute (created by the International Criminal Court) such as genocide, crimes against humanity and war, “we believe that the approval of the ICC may be possible”.
