SANTIAGO.- The western Metropolitan Public Prosecutor's Office, in collaboration with police, destroyed over 100 thousand pirated compact discs this morning, valued at $100 million pesos.

The items were seized between 2007 and the present year in the neighborhoods of Maipú, Pudahuel and Cerrillos, in various street markets in these sectors.

The Prosecutor's Office informed that there are two types of pirated CDs: the first comprises copies made onto blank CDs, and the most common way is to produce a disc that is identical to the original. The latter is the method most often used by organized groups who work in the illegal vending of these products.

40 people have been detained to date, the majority of whom have been charged with the misdemeanor of infringement of Intellectual Property laws.
