SANTIAGO.- 234 individuals detained, 160 of which were in Santiago; 22 policemen wounded, two by gunshot and the rest by pellets and stones; and nine civilians injured, one with cranial fractures. This is the state of affairs reported this morning by the undersecretary of the Interior, Felipe Harboe, resulting from the incidents of September 11th.
"On a national level, and in contrast to previous years, we have yet to lament a death. Less policemen and less civilians were injured", stated the official on Radio Cooperativa.
Harboe commented that although firearms were used, the incidence was also less than in previous years.
One of his main concerns was over the presence of minors in yesterday's incidents. For example, in the municipality of Peñalolén, children as young as 10 and 12 were handling homemade weapons.
"The presence of minors is of great concern because they are often used as human shields and this is truly an act of cowardice that has nothing at all to do with September 11. Why do families allow these children to go out into the streets?" criticized Harboe.
