CURICO.- Close to 3 thousand kilos of black market meat was seized during a bust performed as a joint-effort by police and sanitation officials in the four provinces of Maule.

Thanks to an anonymous tip received by Police Investigations detectives in Curicó and officials at the Office of Sanitation, authorities were led to a home in the country where a steer had been killed just moments before under non-sanitary conditions.

In light of the Sanitation Code violation, Curicó PDI detectives seized some 100 kilos of beef, insides, freezers, weights, saws, two butcher knives, a chainsaw, barbeque grills, as well as a loaded revolver.

After seeing the police, the owner of the home and suspected butcher fled the area, running through adjacent farming plantations.

According to the Curicó newspaper, "La Prensa", health officials have urged people who wish to purchase animals for the National Holiday celebrations to do so from authorized establishments that adhere to all sanitation codes, and not from clandestine businesses or private homes.
