SANTIAGO.- The Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alejandro Foxely, revealed today that he had feared the failure of the extraordinary summit called between members of the United South American Nations (UNASUR), due to the demand made during the closing statements by the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, to condemn the United States.

During the meeting held at La Moneda yesterday to address the current crisis in Bolivia, the Venezuelan Chief of State reportedly asked that the alleged intervention by Washington in the situation of the Andean nation be condemned.

"There are different points of view (…) I mean that we don't share his opinion, we believe that problems in the region should be resolved in the region, I don't like to place the responsibility on others", Foxely stated during an interview with Canal 13.

"His tone did not strike me as being supportive of reaching an agreement, fortunately he was not backed by the rest (…) I don’t like to point the finger at anyone", he added.

Nevertheless, Foxely praised the fact that Chávez finally gave in to the general consensus, saying that he displayed "an attitude that speaks well of what this region is capable of".
