SANTIAGO.- Simón Esteban Moyano Fernádez (19) was placed in custody today after being charged with the pre-mediated murder of Víctor Garrido, who was stabbed to death last Friday during a gang fight at the Costanera Andrés Bello Park.
At the hearing, Prosecuting Attorney Vinko Fodich stated that the defendant represents a threat to public safety due to the horrific nature of his actions, citing that the young man allegedly thrashed the victim with a bottle after he had already fallen to the ground and was unable to defend himself.
The action was apparently committed by a group of individuals and was recorded by a security camera in a nearby building.
Moyano voluntarily turned himself into the 39th Police Station in El Bosque after seeing himself in the footage played on several television stations. The young man was then taken to the Homicide Department, where he spent close to 4 hours issuing a statement to police and was scheduled to appear at a hearing that took place this morning.
Meanwhile, the defense attorney objected to placing Moyano in custody during the investigation, arguing that he was not the one who mortally wounded the victim, saying that he had only hit him with the bottle. Nevertheless, the prosecutor argued that all participants in the incident are guilty of murder.
Moyano will remain at Santiago Criminal Court 1 throughout the investigation, which has been scheduled to last 90 days.
