SANTIAGO.– The president of the truck driver organization of La Araucanía, José Villagrán, affirmed that someone should have to pay the political cost of the incendiary attacks against trucks in the region.

"Somebody is not doing their job here. The responsible authorities have to assume the political cost of allowing La Araucanía to remain in a state of constant terrorist attacks", stated Villagrán on Radio Cooperativa.

The leader claimed that it is unfathomable that, in a country where "it is said that the Rule of Law is operational", that drivers are not ensured the necessary security to transport their cargo.

According to Villagrán, the authorities claim to have identified and located their attackers, but unfortunately, with the new penal processes, it is very difficult to secure adequate evidence to press charges, since they carry out a type of destruction that leaves no evidence.

"Many individuals have been identified, but it is very difficult to charge them (...) and now that summer is on its way, it may be even more impossible", announced the union leader.

He went on to share that within the organization, truckers have begun to talk about arming themselves, but that he, as the president of the union, believes that to do so would be a huge mistake.
