Man who raped granddaughter commits suicide after being reported to police

SANTIAGO.- A 54 year old man identified as Manuel González Hernández was found hanging in the back patio of his home by the Bureau of Police Investigations today, after officials arrived to question him concerning accusations filed by his 12 year-old granddaughter that he had raped her on two occasions.

The sexual abuse had allegedly occurred after the girl was sent to live with her grandfather a couple of weeks ago.

According to police, the first incident took place over the weekend of National Holidays, while the second rape occurred yesterday.

After being discovered by his daughter in law, González Hernández threatened to take his own life if he were reported to the police. The man first attempted to drown himself at a riverbed in Puente Alto, but survived.

Later, González Hernández returned to his home where he changed clothes and left again, prompting his family to search for him. When they returned to the house around 8:30 pm however, they found the man hanging from a rafter in the backyard of the residence.

According to officials assigned to the case, González may have attempted to rape his 17 year-old biological daughter early this year and also sexually molested his granddaughter before raping her.
