SANTIAGO.- Fernándo González (ATP Nº 11) was given no easy task this morning during his debut at the Tokyo ATP Tournament. In a very close match, Chile's number one player finally managed to defeat Taiwanese player Yen-Hsun Lu (ATP Nº69) by 1-6, 7-5 and 6-3.
For 1 hour and 54 minutes, the La Reina native was forced to push himself to the max in order to get the upper hand over his Asian counterpart, who is currently at the top of his game.
The beginning of the match could not have started out worse for the Chilean player who, in only 19 minutes and with two break points against him, categorically lost the first set 1-6.
During the twelfth game of the second set, González managed to break the Taiwanese player, closing out the set with a score of 7-5 in 1 hour and five minutes.
In the third set, there was no break until the eighth game, when González took advantage of his experience to steal the serve from Lu. After that, it was only a matter of keeping the serve to close out the match with a score of 6-3 in 29 minutes.
During the third round of the Japanese tournament, the silver medal winner at the Beijing Olympic Games will face American player Amer Delic (ATP Nº135), with whom he has never before competed.
