Mechanic in life-threatening condition alter gasoline tank explosion

SANTIAGO.- A mechanic, identified as 49 year old Samuel Díaz Soto is currently fighting for his life after a tank of gasoline exploded in his face while he was performing a repair in the municipality of Peñalolén.


According to Radio Cooperativa, the incident occurred last night as Díaz was working in the "ADS" mechanic shop located on Del Valle avenue in the aforementioned municipality.  Díaz had been repairing the engine of a vehicle that had a tank of gasoline attached to it.


Suddenly, the tank caught fire and some of the fuel spilled onto the table. When the mechanic tried to put out the flames, the tank exploded, leaving the man with serious burns.


Díaz was first helped by his nephew, who took him to the Posta de Peñalolén medical center. From there, Díaz was taken to Salvador Hospital, where he had to be revived and, after being stabilized, was sent to the Posta Central, where he is currently receiving treatment.


According to the victim's wife, who identified herself as María Teresa, her husband received burns covering 50 to 80% of his body.
