SANTIAGO.- The president of the Christian Democracy (DC), Soledad Alvear, has proposed a political, social, private and public agreement to confront the current international economic scenario – calling for an expedited discussion of the budget law to encourage confidence within Chile.

"Now is the time when we can take measures to face this crisis with audacity and innovation, coming together to work on a political, social, public and private pact involving society as a whole", the senator told Radio Cooperativa.

Alvear indicated that, despite the fact that the country is better prepared now than in the past to face the crisis, "it is evident that when there is an earthquake on a global scale, we are going to experience aftershocks". As such, Alvear issued a call to protect jobs, prevent small businesses from going bankrupt and "display signs of a high level of cooperation from both the public and private sectors on this matter".

Referring to the proposal made by the UDI Senator, Jovino Novoa, to delay the discussion on the Budget Law so that it can be further analyzed, Alvear stated that "what needs to be done is exactly the opposite", assuring that an accelerated approval of the bill would help to establish internal calm.
