SANTIAGO.- Within just the last few hours, there have reportedly been four attempted robberies of ATM cash dispensers throughout the country.
The first incident took place in the municipality of Maipú, where a group of suspects attacked a ServiEstado branch office on Calle Manuel Rodríguez. The individuals reportedly tied a rope around the ATM machine and attempted to pull it off of its foundation with a Mitsubishi jeep.
As they attempted to pull the machine however, an alarm began to sound, which prompted the assailants to flee the scene, leaving the jeep and the half-destroyed cash machine in the middle of the road.
Meanwhile, at the intersection of Cumming and San Pablo streets in downtown Santiago, police detained two suspects who had made a hole in the wall of a pharmacy in order to steal the ATM machine inside and carry it away with a truck.
The third incident took place at a Santander bank located at the intersection of the Panamericana Norte and Américo Vespucio, in the municipality of Quilicura. There, four suspects used two vehicles to break the front window pane of the bank and tie up an ATM machine. When the individuals attempted to pull the ATM machine off of its base however, the chain broke and nearby security guards became aware of the activity.
Lastly, in Concón, a group of suspects drove a truck to a BCI bank branch along Avenida Los Manatiales, dragging the automatic cash dispenser off of its base with a cable. The quick arrival of police however, caused the assailants to flee - leaving the machine a block from the bank.
