SANTIAGO.- The man who attacked Luis Plaza, the RN candidate for Mayor of Cerro Navia, turned himself in to police today. He assaulted the candidate following a campaign event.

The individual, who attacked the candidate by beating him with a blunt object, was identified as 24 year-old Francisco Javier Segovia Díaz.

Díaz says that he turned himself into the BRICRIM unit of police in Quinta Normal after realizing the extent of the injuries he caused to Plaza, who is currently bed-ridden.

The general prefect of National Police Investigations, Óscar Gutierrez, has asserted that Segovia indicated that the attack on the candidate was motivated by strictly personal reasons due to problems between the two men.

"The reasons behind this attack are of an absolutely personal nature. This person has no political affiliation, he has no criminal record and, at the moment of the crime, he was under the influence of alcohol", stated Gutiérrez.

According to Radio Cooperativa, Segovia was driven to the Santiago Justice Center, where he will be charged.
