SANTIAGO.- After being elected as Mayor of Santiago by a significant margin over the Concertación, Pablo Zalaquett asserted that currently his only goal is to become a great leader for the municipality.
"I said that I was coming to Santiago for eight years, just as I was in La Florida, no more and no less, although to do that I will need to be re-elected. Meanwhile, my only aspiration is to be a great Mayor for Santiago, lay all the cards on the table and then we'll see what happens", Zalaquett stated during an interview with Chilevisión.
When asked about the two periods he has planned to be in office, Zalaquett explained that he comes from the private sector, and believes that if one is in office longer than two periods, "they are not really there any more, it looks forced", which is why space needs to be left so that others can get into politics.
With regards to a possible run for Presidential office, the new Mayor of Santiago denied the prospect, arguing that he has an obligation to the residents of the municipality and it seems inappropriate for him to run for President.
