SANTIAGO.- The defeated Communist Party (PC) candidate for Mayor of Estación Central, Hugo Gutiérrez, has stated that both Estación Central, as well as Valparaíso could have been won by his party and the Concertación if the omission pact had been extended.
"When we spoke with Aldo Cornejo about the possibility of extending the agreement, there was an extensive amount of conversation to prevent" the dispersion of votes, Gutiérrez told Radio Cooperativa.
Gutiérrez added that "we were generals facing a battle" and stressed that "it was all avoidable".
In Estación Central, UDI candidate Rodrigo Delgado was elected mayor with 21,372 votes compared to Gutierrez' 15,539 votes and 12, 317 votes for DC candidate Néstor Santander.
Meanwhile, in Vaparaíso, UDI candidate Jorge Castero won the election with 53,305 votes compared to 50,147 votes for Cornejo and 9,260 votes for Iván Vuskovic from the coalition "Junto Podemos".
